Perhaps Sierra (being the bastards they are) are trying to suck up to Microshaft. Just an idea - don't look at me like that!!

It's already noted somewhere at the General Discussion forum. Also read about the easter eggs.

Ah, but Mr. Bates is not as caring as you might think. Ask him about labor and he'll tell you he treats his orcs "almost like humans".

hmm he also reminds me more of an englishman than an american. He also has a thing about manners, he once had chukka pound me to a pile of unidentified glob since he didn't like my manners. definetly english

Almost everyone was a racist snob in 19th Century Europe, which is analagous to Arcanum. So Gilbert Bates was exactly the liberal he claimed to be when he said he treated them almost like humans.

Of cvourse he is Bill Gates, it's supposed to be blatantly obvious - at least as blatant as they could make it without being sued.

Gilbert Bates... nickname for Gilbert is Gil

Gil Bates, swap the first two letters of each name and you get Bil Gates

Besides, the endless whining from Applebie about how Bates only beat him out by cheating and stealing pretty much removes any doubt. Even without the name similarities the whole situation was more similar to the anti-MS crusade of the last decade than anything else in the business world.

I wonder how far we can extend this analogy?

I mean, Gil Bates stole his original technology from dwarves, right? I can't think of a parallel for that with Billy-boy.

Then again, Gil kind of had a split with his good friend (Stennar) over what to do with his technology, and Gil's use of the tech eventually led to his friend dying off.

Sounds spookily like the IBM/Microsoft split to me.

If we can push this even further, we should be able to find the dwarves that Billy-boy originally stole Windows/DOS from.

    Well,

I read this somewhere, too lazy to dig up the exact page so I could be wrong, going from memory, but here's how I remember the history of DOS (disclaimer: I could be wrong on several details. If you want to know for sure, look it up somewhere, don't take my word for it.):
IBM offered the creator of the CP/M operating system (ancestor of DOS) $10 000 for his new version, CP/M 86. The guy wasn't home when they came a-callin', so his wife let them in and rejected the offer. Seeing the royalties they had made from the first CP/M, she figured they'd be able to make more than $10 000 from the new version.

A little-known company called Microsoft then threw together a CP/M clone called QDOS (Quick-and-Dirty-OS) and went into business with IBM, and the guy who did all the pioneering on CP/M got left penniless.

Well, looking at this page shows that I was somewhat close, but not 100% accurate. Click the link for the full story.
