Dragon Age has given me hope for the genre. It's the first decent new old-style RPG I've played in quite some time (I don't think Mask of the Betrayer quite counts, being an expansion instead of a standalone.) Yay for Bioware!

Fallout 3 and Oblivion were travesties in the worst possible way, and most RPGs have nothing but a big fucking plot they want you to follow and you cannot change where things end. That really, really shits me.

Well, Bioware recently has gotten very good at at least letting you change the end, even if not the path you take to get there.

If you want a game where you can actually make decisions along the way, I recommend emulating Shin Megami Tensei (from back in 1992; it gets my vote for "the most groundbreaking RPG never released in the US"). Though be warned, it does not like emulators.

I've only very briefly played Fallout 3 and only seen Oblivion played, but they seemed quite successful as crossover RPGs. I would imagine that the perspective of the games alone drew in players that otherwise would not have considered themselves fans of the RPG genre.

Fallout 3 HURT MY BRAIN. Seriously. There was so much stupidity in that game that I actually cried. ME. CRIED.

Oblivion committed a great gaming sin, in that it was unforgivably boring.

Fallout 3 isn't all that bad if you pretend it isn't Fallout.

Fallout 3 and Oblivion were really great masterpieces of the modern RPG era. Both original ideas and so well presented. Bethsedia really out did themselves, not like that terrible Morrowind game. Although I would prefer if they upgraded the vampires in both games to make them sparkle in the daylight, just to maintain modern cultural references.

I myself quite enjoy Zanza's trolling, and, I must say, nothing says entertainment like seeing people who don't like his trolling feeding him, giving him powers and motivation to troll some more as a result.

Not only are you an arse, you're a chauvanist pig as well. Every time someone calls you out on being a dick, you accuse them of having White Knight syndrome, which is a.) fucking rediculous, because you're just being a dick, and b.) a good way to get th femi-nazis on your arse.

Luckily I'm not a femi-nazi. I just think you need to get a brain transplant.

By analyzing this, we are forced to declare that Zanza has just scored another point.
