I decided to follow up on our news post yesterday and see if I could get any more details out of Leonard Boyarsky about the rumoured "Journey to the Centre of Arcanum". Here's what he had to say:

That is true. "Journey to the Centre of Arcanum" was our original plan for the Source Engine.

There's not much to tell, really. We hadn't gotten that far in the planning stages before there was some sort of problem between Sierra and Valve which scrapped the whole thing. Our general idea was to try to do alot of the same things we tried to do with Bloodlines, but in the Arcanum setting.

So there you go, Sierra and Valve killed an Arcanum sequel! Mind you it would've been a different experience to Arcanum's isometric style.

I just stopped loving Valve, for some reason. I wonder why?

Could it be Steam?

No, not Steam.....(rolls eyes)

Arcanum to have a sequel - destroyed in the planning stages. That's worse thean there being no plans for a sequel at all.

:grrr:

Thank you so much for clarifying what the first post already said. I totally thought that we were just throwing in suggestions as to why Valve sucks. Glad you're here to set me straight.

It really is a shame, but it's not like Arcanum is the only game that's been blue-balled because of corporate greediness. One would think that split money over a game would be better than no money at all.

I am rightly chastened. I was re-stating the post because I couldn't express the resentment I felt at the time (i.e. I was drunk), however the grating way in which I would have said such a statement could not obviously have been appanernt in the mere words when robbed of their audible qualities. It actuallly is not the fact the there was money spent on a nixed project that I resent - I really don't care, what I disliked is I had put the possiblility of a Arcanum sequel in a grave with "No Fucking Way" for a headstone and this news only served to bring up the painful memories associated with putting it there in the first place.

Hum. Just have to break in here, even to this hasn't been to active.
Don't fuck valve. They just decided to break free from a company for release so they could go on and work themself. Sierras fault for giving all the internet sale for all valves titels to valve, ergo, they released steam.
Then Sierra tried to get back on them wich probaly fucked everyting up.

Prince of Persia is a platformer/puzzle game, and therefore has a higher marketability.

Well, then we can try to count on the circles that fashion make, and hope that someday soon, Real roleplaying games return to the spotlight....

I hope they don´t change the system that much....

And, of course, they'll return to Arcanum as the sole inspiration for a new rpg, instead of say:
Final Fantasy
Elder Scrolls
WOW
Anything with a fucking dragon
Ultima Online
Possibly even a new idea that will undoubtedly suck
...

No, of course that Arcanum wouldn't be the preferential title, but if, in that hypothetical situation in wich Real RPGs went back into the spotlight, we could expect for a wave of them. It wouldn't be the first to return, but maybe, when they had already explored their money cows, and wish to use some unorthodox and innovative ideas...
If unorthodox, why not steampunk? If steampunk, why not reasonably well known and much awaited Arcanum2?

To be honest I think the problem would have been more on the Sierra side of things. Valve are generally cool about that side of stuff, Sierra aren't.

1. New fucktard hasn't read rules.

2. This is gravedigging I believe, wich is against the rules.

What? Two months in the news forum? I'd hardly call that an offence.

@Mori, don't mind Wobbler, noone else does. :)

When I'm not busy typing, I can see a delete post button for things I've sent in. Sometimes.

As for gravedigging...it's only gravedigging if after a period of a month or so a new response is posted in a topic that has nothing to do with the original "theme" of the thread. If a thread is six months or a year old it might be better to just start a new topic.

Is this correct, or was I too liberal with the times?

Far to liberal in my opinion, but unfortunatey I have not the power to enforce such a ruling (yet).

The gravedigging rule seems to not really be enforced outside of the Arcanum Hints & Tips forum or the General Discussion. And even in those there are threads which are exempt.
