So I watched this last night, and I was pleasantly surprised. It starts off as a fairly prosaic horror film with a group of teens staying in, surprise surprise, a Cabin in the Woods. A shadowy organisation is arranging their deaths through supernatural means in a sense that is genre mocking and very reminiscent of Scream - maybe even in a way that's slightly more funny.

The last half hour or so is however so mind-blowingly crazy and ridiculous it raises the game of the film entirely, and makes it really quite special. Saying anything would give too much away, but suffice to say anyone who likes horror-comedy films and horror that tends towards the ridiculous should definitely go see it.[/spam]

So has anyone else seen it? If so did you like it or do I just have weird tastes? It's currently grossing higher than the Hunger Games which says a lot considering it's a horror film.

EDIT: Fun fact, the film was actually made in 2009 but due to MGM's bankruptcy (the studio that originally made it) it's been in limbo 'til now. I was wondering why Chris Hemsworth would choose to do this after Thor.

Genre-busting goodness in one of Joss Whedon's finest hours. Have you seen Funny Games (Austrian 1997 with a 2008 American remake)?

And a mighty pretty eye I'm sure it is. Have you seen Cabin, Smuel? It's worth the time. So's Funny Games, come to that.

No I haven't, I gather it's good? If it's in a similar vein to Cabin in the Woods I'll give one of them a watch when I can.

It's similarly irreverent to the horror/slasher genre, but with less overt comedy. It's full of mind-blowing oddities and second-person addresses to the audience that are alternately hilarious, guilt-inspiring, or just plain trippy.

I'll make sure to give it a watch then, thanks for the recommendation.

I thought I'd seen Funny Games, but it turns out I was actually thinking of Funny Bones.

Bought it, watched it, liked it. Didn't seem overly connected to Cabin in the Woods though. I bought the US version as it had the same writer and director and because I like Tim Roth (mainly from Reservoir Dogs) and Naomi Watts (mainly from Mulholland Drive), also I didn't think I might interpret the smarminess of the psychopaths as well as I could if they were speaking in German. It was worth a watch, so once again:
