What I meant was merley that from his post I got the feeling that the thread was some sort of shit throwing contest on Drog, wich it's not.

Our goal is to host everything related to Troika Games. Hence, all Drog's patches are belong to us.

Ha. Imagine coming to HoL with the assumption that "respect" is just dished out like meat and potatos.

So change some of the NPC's to use different art. I found it odd too, but the manual does state that it is possible for some Half-Elves to look more elven. Probably in the same regard that certain Half-Orcs are indistinguishable from humans where-as others look fully orcish. When Drog changed this in the patch he completely disregarded everything in the manual as well as the in-game description for Half-Elves.

"They resemble their human parents more."

I would almost say that it was lazy on his part, but then his dedication to this project proves that he is certainly not lazy. It still baffles me... there aren't even that many Half-Elves in the game that he'd have to change. Maybe it is harder than it sounds though.

Well, obviously that can't actually be true - someone doesn't go edit all those protos out of laziness. I do agree about the half-elven art, though. I might even question why the males look like elves.

It's a good point about some half-orcs having the same model but different palette as orcs. I would have thought that Troika might have some half-elves use the human palette, and some the elven. This would make more sense, in my opinion, but changing it know would be simply a matter of one's opinion.

I would also imagine that most living half-elves are far less than half elven. Pure-bloods might mingle in human societies, but not stay there, while their children probably wouldn't return to the elven forests, but stay in the cities, and their progeny could probably be classified as half-elven. Maybe male half-elves stand out more because elves are shorter, and the women of both races are of a similar proportion? Elves in Arcanum are shorter, right?

As far as I can tell by looking at the avatar images, the similarity of humans and the various races of Arcanum is striking, based only on exaggerated features of existing humans, instead of real racial differences, sometimes to the point that it is impossible to tell them apart; for example, less ugly half-orcs can entirely pass as humans, and live their entire lives without being discovered (compare this with a mixed white-black trying to pass as a completely white), so I can't possibly believe that such a negligible difference could have any effect in the distance of several generations. Unless of course, if MAGIC is involved ;)

Actually, elves are described as being shorter than humans in the Arcanum manual (which is inconsistent with the dialogue you have with the Bedokkan leader where he describes humans as not being as tall as elves, but whatever).

The racial similarities between humans and the other races is simply due to the fact that the other races are descended from mankind, whether due to natural or supernatural selection. ;)

Yeah, there are definitely a lot of similarities. It always stood out to me that the portraits of the different races made them look very realistic. Troika did a good job taking magic out of the realm of the fantastic or unbelievable and making it rational, in accord with the era we find here. And, technology is made more fantastic and incredible, giving the two forces some commonalities than could be conceived of before Arcanum. It's real genius, I think - who would imagine without Troika's storytelling that magic and technology could be either similar or dichotomous? I would have thought that they just had nothing to do with each other. I think Ristezze had a part in convincing me, as a matter of fact...

Oh right, elves. If i wasn't so fuckin' lazy, I'd go find my manual and throw down some citations. But, I can't even remember what's in it, precisely. Good thing DE has the thing memorized. Then again, it would be hard not to with what, 10 manuals? haha.

From Sierra-Arcanum (archived),

"Half-elves tend to show the physical build of the human parent, but this is not always the case. They range widely from 60 to 75 inches in height, and weigh between six hundred and eleven hundred stone. At times they can pass as fully human or fully elven, but they can almost always be spotted by the trained observer by a blend of features which is common to neither race."

The manual says the same thing and in the menu description for Half-Elves on the race/background selection screen says the same.

Wait... wait... wait...

What is the difference between human female and elven female art, again?

One (playable) female model and no (playable) women for the non-median races.

I'm amazed there wasn't a feminist uproar at this game's release.

I'm sure they were offended, but were too fascinated by their ability to have a threesome with other females at Madam Lil's. Or, they thought being able to have sex with an old man just so he'll let you into his gentleman's club to be empowering.

Frankly I think it's pretty disrespectful of him to assume that. he should just get it for his mod work. I did have quite a bit for him because of the good he's done the community, but that doesn't mean he hands down gets it from everyone. I've lost immense ammounts of respect for him over this little fiasco, and essentially trolling theforums with "Elder Joachim"

Well, there is some merit to the first part of that. After all, quite a bit of DU's reputation in the Arcanum modding community does come from his work, but then, I haven't seen a reason for anyone to lose it. I think if people are expressing disappointment in DBT, they are at least tacitly admitting that they did, in fact, have respect for him because of his work.

Also, I don't think there's a rule that you have to use the same username for t-a and rpgcodex. I have no problem with what he's posted in every other part of the forum, but I'd guess he's regretting speaking about himself in the third person in this thread, or at least I might. Everyone should be able to defend themselves, but not under false pretenses. However, as I said, the rest of the stuff on the forum isn't under false pretenses.

I do have to put it out there that you can't take personally all the shit that happens on the internet, especially with it being so anonymous. Anyone ever play WoW? Yeah, there you are. If you don't let things go that don't happen to you directly anyway, you can't ever resolve anything. Then again, not all of us are moderators who can send people to the Vault...

I think he left because a few people here agreed on a single point;
Things in the extra fix were already in the game's code, they just weren't made to work. He was saying there was no way to put the items in the game if they didn't work perfectly, but that's not the case.
Honestly, it's all speculation on my part and I'm probably silly for saying it. I just know he's not said a thing at all for a little while.

I think what he meant was that there was no reason to add these items, and no way to do so without at least basic modding skills. For non-hardcore Arcanum fans on rpgcodex, this would be a more logical explanation.

I figure he left after he got shut down when people saw through the anonymous 3rd person defense of himself and criticism of DU. What the fuck is that called? Honestly, this is the only forum I have ever spent much time in.

Most of his very few posts on the one day he joined us were in other sections not dealing with his patches or criticism of him. Looks like his last posts weren't even in the news thread.

It's too bad he decided to leave - he mostly posted about modding, including responding to Crypton's posts about editing the .exe. Unfortunately, he didn't stay to discuss making the source data for the protos into a file external to the .exe. That would have been pretty fuckin' great.

Or, maybe he just registered a new username? That might be the best move, if he hasn't lost interest here entirely. I'm good with that, as long as he doesn't talk about himself while pretending he's not DBT. Oh well, hopefully we will see more of his work on the .exe in upcoming patches.

We're sayin the same thing buddy. I did have respect for him because of his work, but I lost a good portion because of his actions. My issue is that he expects everyone to respect him regardless of his actions. I don't really want him to stop modding though, I didn't think he would take it that personally. Honestly I figured both parties would have apologized by now and taken care of it.

Yeah, I here you there.

Seriously, though, I'm not sure what has changed with the elven/half-elven female art. I didn't even know that there was even more than 1 kind of female art, not counting unique NPCs.
