1950's pin-up queen Bettie Page passed away Thursday at the age of 85. Here's the best story I've found: http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/ ... 0709.story And a nice obit at her main fansite: http://www.bettiepage.com/obit/obit.html Rest easy Bettie, you'll never be forgotten.
This thread is useless without pictures. Sorta SFW, and hotlinked because I don't have access to my server for another week.
She's definitely inspired quite a few people. I've read Dark Horse comics with a heroine who looks almost exactly like Bettie. Not as magnetic as the real thing, but pretty damn close. It's strange how people with such interesting lives and successful careers will die in the shadow of their former existence.
Well she spent the last few years of her life in a mental institution...so maybe her lack of interest was due to some dissociative disorder that made her think she wasn't really that same woman who playfully posed for all of those pinups. Perhaps the way she was raised caused difficulties in relationships she would forge with everyone she met. But, from the way she sounded, she could've been just very down to earth and didn't really care how famous she was. She was having a great time living her life.
You know, "The Rocketeer" may very well have been the first American comic book I ever read. The girlfriend of the main character looked just like that. Probably experienced my first comic-induced hard-on when she was photographed in the nude.
